The DC Courts will commemorate Black History Month with two very different events representing the diversity of the African-American experience: "Celebrating through Art and Poetry" and the following week "Brown v. Board: Where we've been and where we're going." The public is encouraged to attend both of these free events.
Friday, February 20, 12 Noon to 2:00 PM in the Jurors' Lounge, Room 3100 The chief judges from the DC Court of Appeals and the DC Superior Court will kick off the event, which will feature the choirs from Ballou High School and Jefferson Junior High, along with the DCScores Poetry Slam! Team from Smothers Elementary, youngsters from the DC Creative Writing Workshop, and some young poets from Moten Elementary School. Grammy nominee and Magistrate Judge Tara Fentress will serve as mistress of ceremonies. Friday, February 27, 12 Noon to 2:00 PM in the Jurors' Lounge, Room 3100 Chief Judge Annice Wagner will make opening remarks for this session focusing on Brown vs. Board. Professors from local law schools will join with area teens to discuss what progress has been made and what remains to be done. The audience will be invited to participate in a discussion on this critical issue.
